MORAY.

It is located 40 km from the city of Cusco, and 7 km from the town of Maras, at about 3500 m.a.s.l. The word Moray seems to come from the corn harvest that took place in the month of May, which was called Aymoray, and also from the dehydration of potatoes, which is called Moraya or Moray.

Moray was possibly an Inca agricultural experimentation center where experiments were carried out, since the temperature varies in the form of concentric circles on its platforms. Having the highest temperature in its central circle and gradually lowering as it rises, there are 20 different types of microclimates. Moray is believed to be attributed as a model to calculate the production of the Urubamba Valley, as well as other places.

Why does it have that name?

There are many theories as to the reason for the name, among them:

It is in Quechua and means: “territory occupied since ancient times”.
It comes from the corn called “Aymoray”.
For the month of sowing, according to the Inca calendar, which would be May.
It comes from the name of the dehydrated potato, “Moraya”.

It has a dry and temperate climate, its temperature is between 21 °C during the day and 1 °C at night.

SALT MINES OF MARAS.

They are located 46 km from the city of Cusco, at about 3380 m.a.s.l. They are made up of more than 3,000 5 m² pools in the Qaqawiñay ravine, they are fed by an underground saline spring of more than 110 million years during the formation of the Andes mountain range. Giving it an impressive landscape with the ravine and the mountains. This salt is marketed by the residents in different presentations, including chocolates.

It is located 46 km from Cusco, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas; on the slope of the mountain called Qaqawiñay, with an altitude of 3380 meters above sea level.

This site is known as the land of rainbows, in this place we can see mansions and temples on the remains that were the royal house of the Inka Tupac Inka Yupanqui. Likewise, Chinchero is also known for its Sunday fair, internationally recognized for its work and beauty, since in this place some Inca ceremonies and customs are still intact.

The village is composed of 12 communities with an organization system called “Ayllu”, this organization is from Inca times and is still governed in Chinchero.
